Hi Fimkers.

Just a quick heads-up for what to expect in the coming weeks.

We are currently upgrading the FIMK server (java) to the NXT 1.5 code base, which requires a hard fork.
This means we'll automatically be getting support for some excellent new NXT inventions.

  • Prunable Messages
  • Voting System
  • Monetary System
  • Websocket P2P Connections (excellent when combined with the FIMK Gossip protocol)

To keep the number of hard forks at a minimum we'll also be rolling out FIMK only features.

  • Private Assets for Financial Institutions
  • New Account Identifiers (accounts will come in two flavors name@fimk.fi or name@whatever-other-domain-you-have-in-mind.com) (sounds simple but believe me when I say there is a lot more to it)
  • New Unique Secret Feature .... Offline Vouchers
  • Offchain Free Gossip Protocol Improvements
  • Virtual AE Improvements
  • Namespaced Alias Improvements

The FIMK Gossip protocol is expected to get a huge boost in speed when combined with the NXT websocket based p2p server.

Cheers,
Dirk

Side note: While going over all the NXT code improvements for NXT 1.5.* I must say they did an excellent job.
Code quality just keeps getting better! You can thank them if you like.

Notice for anyone running a node with hallmark:

The following comes from the NXT 1.5.6e changelog and will apply to FIMK users.

Incompatible change: If using non-default port, the hallmark must also include
that port, otherwise the hallmark is ignored.

No it hasn't. We will notify clearly.
Still working towards it, server code is ready just lacking some UI for new features.

Switching on the hard fork is postponed approx. 48 hours to sync with the release of the email account format and new downloadable client. The initial timing became too tight with all the required accessory deployments, press releases etc.

We hope nobody minds :)

With the update issues, has this hard fork been postponed until the next version is released?

I'm under the impression the hard fork to FIMK 0.6. series has been through already a couple of days. There are some smaller forking issues whose status is unclear to me. Dirk will fill us in about the situation when he can.

If you run 0.6.0 or later you are good for now, but it's better to be on 0.6.1.
I'm working on 0.6.2 which will contain the mentioned update mechanism, when enough people have 0.6.2 the next hard fork can be send out quicker.

After that we dont have to announce forks months in advance, you'll have an update window of a few days/weeks (we are still looking into those details ) in which you can run the update program which downloads the new app from github, verifies it's HASH and installs it.

You dont have to update perse, if you wait until your version expires your FIMK server will simply shutdown. Start it again and it will print the update message and shuts down again.

On a relatively fast internet connection the update should take no longer than a minute.

You could always look at https://lompsa.com to see if you are on a fork we consider that the 'master' node since it normally runs slightly updated software (we compile that one from source). It's FIMK server is also the main peer all new users connect to.

Ooooh!  Press releases?  Accessory deployments?  Please elaborate :)

Did I miss something?  Or, have these not happened yet due to the 0.6 forking issues?

Software "accessory" meaning email server etc.

They remain work in progress due to the ongoing forking problems, and the fact our focus has been forced to spread. Release of full featured email account format with the secure messaging + email servers is an event worth media attention. Insiders have been calling the project the Paypal of Crypto. It's now postponed (not cancelled at all).
